Thanks to international super-group Keane, the East Sussex towns of Battle, Bexhill and Hastings will forever be remembered collectively as “Strangeland”. Through Strangeland, the band’s fifth consecutive number one album, Keane revisit the places and spaces of a youth spent growing up in Battle and share the geographic and emotional journeys that helped shape their lives.

Regular trains run between London and Battle taking from 75 minutes; and the Battle to Hastings journey around 12 minutes. The Battle to Hastings train also stops at St Leonards Warrior Square where it’s possible to change and take a train to Bexhill.
ロンドンとバトルを75分で繋ぐ普通列車が運行されています（バトルからヘイスティングスへは12分程度）。バトルからヘイスティングスへ向かう途中、列車はSt Leonards Warrior Squareにも停車し、ここでベックスヒル行きの列車への乗り換えが可能です。

This refers to the site of the world famous Battle of Hastings, 14 October 1066.
世界的に有名なヘイスティングスの戦いが起きた地(1066年10月14日)を表しています。

In an interview given to 360 Sessions for Channel 4, Richard Hughes, drummer of the band, reminisces about how the band members used to break into the battleground at night.
Channel4の為に行われた360Sessionsでのインタビューにおいて、バンドのドラマーであるリチャード・ヒューズが、かつて夜中にメンバーみんなでここに忍び込んだ時の思い出を懐かしんでいます。

After William of Normandy became William the Conqueror, having defeated the Saxons led by Harold, famously said to have been struck down by an arrow through his eye, William ordered that Battle Abbey should be built to atone for the blood that had been shed during the battle.
ノルマンディーのウィリアム公がハロルド率いるサクソン軍を討伐し（目に矢を受けて倒れたというのが通説）、征服王ウィリアム一世となった後、ウィリアム公は戦いにより流された血への償いとして、バトル・アビーを築くよう命令しました。

Today the site is owned by English Heritage and the visitor experience of this atmospheric place is second to none. The visitors’ centre tells the well known story of the battle using exciting CGI graphics and footage taken from re-enactment events. Walk the battlefield and wander the ruins of the abbey, where Keane filmed and performed for their 2012 April Channel 4 360 Tours video.

Marley Lane is short walk from the station in the direction of the town centre. Half way down Marley Lane you will come to the beautiful Battle Great Wood, owned by the Forestry Commission, and open to the public.

North Trade Road is on the northern edge of town and leads directly onto Battle High Street. Historically the route traders would have taken into town when delivering supplies required during the build of Battle Abbey.

Powdermill Lane is one of the roads linking Battle and Bexhill, leading out of Battle with the battlegrounds on your right.

/The Gunpowder Capital
The conspiracy and criminal tactics connected to Guy Fawkes’ gunpowder plot were not as far removed from peaceful Battle as you may think.
ガイ・フォークスの火薬陰謀事件に通ずる陰謀や犯罪画策は、皆さんの想像以上に、平穏なバトルの地と密接な関係にありました。
During the 17th century a roaring gunpowder trade operated from Battle, with the largest works being on the site of what today is the 18th Century Powdermills Country House Hotel. It was these seemingly inconspicuous works that reportedly supplied Guy Fawkes prior to his plot to blow up the Houses of Parliament on 5 November 1605. Although the famous terror plot failed, word got around that the Battle works was involved and for a short while it brought a certain notoriety to the local industry.
17世紀には、今日18th Century Powdermills Country House Hotelとなっている地に大きな拠点が構えられ、バトルから活発な火薬取引が運営されるようになりました。1605年11月5日に国会議事堂を爆破する というガイ・フォークスの策略に協力したのは、この一見目立たない事業であったと伝えられています。かの有名なテロ計画は失敗したに終わったものの、バトルの事業主たちが計画に荷担したという悪評が広まり、いくつかの地元産業に被害をもたらしました。
Gunpowder production in Battle continued through the 17th and 18th centuries, until a number of mishaps derailed the industry in Battle. In 1847, the Duke of Cleveland refused to renew the gunpowder licence, following a number of near misses with over-cooked gunpowder. A large explosion occurred in 1798 when 15 tonnes of gunpowder exploded after being left in the oven too long. As the gunpowder trade came to a premature end, the works on Powdermills Lane became the grand hotel we see today and Battle moved on to a more honest way of making a living.

Making gunpowder was highly dangerous. One slip could mean instant death or being maimed for life, and the modest protection afforded to workers ? leather aprons, clogs with copper caulkers to prevent sparks ? did little to prevent frequent accidents and explosions.
火薬製造は非常に危険な事業でした。たったひとつの失敗が、即死や一生の不具に繋がることもあり、労働者に与えられた僅かな保護設備 ―革製のエプロン、火の粉を防ぐ銅製のコーキング工と揃いの履き物― では、事故や爆発の頻発を防ぐことはほとんど不可能でした。
Exposed to such risks on a daily basis, gunpowder workers developed a special camaraderie, and a strong sense of community grew up around these remote places of work. The workers’ team spirit carried over into their daily lives, as they played football, cricket and in works’ bands together.
日々そのような危険に晒されるうち、火薬製造に関わる労働者たちの間では特別な信頼関係が生まれ、この強い連帯感は職場外で育まれていきました。共にクリケットやフットボール、音楽バンドなどに興じるうち、労働者同士の仲間意識は日常生活にまで及ぶようになりました。
The Battle gunpowder works did not compare in size to others across the country, like the large mills at Waltham Abbey, which was purchased by the crown in the 18th century to protect the quality of supply to the country’s forces. The Battle gunpowder mills continued operating into the early 19th century, but not on the scale of the Waltham Abbey, which played an important role, arming forces for the French Revolution and Napoleonic wars, culminating the Battle of Waterloo in 1815. And as business began to die down in Battle, the works at Waltham Abbey continued to produce gunpowder, which was used during the Crimean and Boer wars.

While not strictly the Bandstand on the Pier referred to in Sovereign Light Caf?, the stylish bandstand at the De La Warr Pavilion was featured in a Keane photoshoot by Alex Lake. One image is featured on our home page and is a key element of the Bexhill sea-front featured in the video.
はっきりとソブリン・ライト・カフェのそれとは示されていないものの、「埠頭の屋外ステージ」は、アレックス・レイクによるKeaneのフォトシュートではDe La Warr Pavilionにあるスタイリッシュな屋外ステージが撮影場所に採用されました。ホームページに採用した一枚は、プロモーションビデオでも採用されたベックスヒル海岸通りの目印です。
(2) East Parade

This is the section of Bexhill seafront which lies east of the De La Warr Pavilion. Strictly speaking, there are no rides on Bexhill’s East Parade but elements of the parade were used in the artwork for the Strangeland album, including the Old Bathing Station and the shelter.
De La Warr Pavilionの東側に延びるベックスヒル海岸通りの一部です。はっきり申し上げると、ベックスヒルのイースト・パレードに遊園地は存在しませんが、オールドベイシング駅やシェルターといったパレードの目印が数ヵ所、Strangelandのアルバムアートワークに使用されています。

Palace Arcade is the row of amusements located off Marine Parade in Bexhill and was used in the filming of the Sovereign Light Cafe video.

Revelation: the East Parade referred to in Sovereign Light Cafe is actually not in Bexhill at all but in Hastings, and the *rides referred to include the boating lake and the funfair.
暴露情報：Sovereign Light Cafeに登場するイースト・パレードは、実はベックスヒルではなくヘイスティングスに存在します。同じく登場する*乗り物は湖のボートや遊園地を洗わしています。
